Media Release: Yvette Berry MLA & Chris Steel MLA, 27 February 2020

A new free bus service will start on Monday 2 March, linking residents of Ginninderry’s first suburb, Strathnairn, to the Kippax Bus Station, Kingsford Smith School and Macgregor Primary School, Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry and Minister for Transport Chris Steel announced today.

Two Hino Ponchos have been acquired to operate the Ginninderry Shuttle service

“The new service (Route 903) will operate 7 days a week, running every half an hour, with an increase to 15-minute frequency during weekday peak periods,” Minister Steel said.

“The service is being delivered in partnership with the Suburban Land Agency and the Ginninderry Joint Venture, using two new HINO Poncho buses purchased for this purpose. The service is part of the Joint Venture’s commitment to provide public transport services for the first residents of Strathnairn as they move into their new homes.”

“We’re interested to see this accessible low floor mini-bus in operation in Ginninderry, and whether it could provide benefits for our community and flexible bus services in the ACT.”

Minister for Housing and Suburban Development and Member for Ginninderra Yvette Berry said that the support given by the SLA and the Ginninderry Joint Venture has meant that introducing bus services as residents move into this new suburb will help establish public transport use and travel patterns very early on.

“This new service for Strathnairn residents means that from day one they are able to connect to the broader Canberra bus network where they can access regular services, including the Rapid 2, connecting them to Belconnen, the City and Barton.”

The Strathnairn service will remain free until Transport Canberra makes changes to the service, requiring the use of a standard bus on this route. This will be done when there is sufficient population living in the area. Fares apply for people travelling onto the broader network.

“We are delighted to be able to partner with the ACT Government to deliver the first resident bus service for Ginninderry. This partnership is the first of its kind for Canberra and provides our residents with a great public transport connection from the time that they move in.”

“The Hino Poncho is a perfect fit for this kind of bus service. It is an innovative shuttle bus with an ultra-low floor design and kerb kneeling function, a wheelchair ramp and a dedicated wheelchair space inside, making it accessible for everyone.”
