The Australian War Memorial Annex at Mitchell was open to the public yesterday. ABC TV news reported on the event, featuring the recently restored Beaufort bomber, which was manufactured locally in Australia during World War II  as well as in its home country, Britain.

The Railways had a surprising important role in wartime aviation, and the Beaufort bombers were one of a number of types of wartime aircraft in which they state railway workshops were important participants. Here's what Wiki has to say:-

"One of the decisive factors in choosing the Beaufort was the ability to produce it in sections. Because of this railway workshops were key subcontractors:

    * Chullora NSW: Front fuselage, undercarriage, stern frames, nacelles.
    * Newport Workshops: Rear fuselage, empennage.
    * Islington Workshops, South Australia: Mainplanes, centre-section."
