Title: Weston-Tugg Parkway access road
Post by: smitho on February 25, 2013, 07:57:40 PM
Appears that work on this long talked about access road may have started.

Since late January/early February, what appears to be earthworks for the necessary ramp access up to the northbound carriageway of the Parkway have commenced on the north-eastern side of Heysen St, Weston.

Well construction starts Monday for a roundabout at the intersection of Hilder & Heysen Streets. It could be possible that earthworks was to create a site office for the works.
Also the only data I can find for that block on ACTMAPi is that it is future residential. With the edges of the Tuggeranong Parkway being heritage listed as, you guessed it, cutting for the Tuggeranong Parkway.

Yeah, re future residential, I think you're right...the more I see of those earthworks, the more it looks like an extension to Weston.

(I'm not sure if the Parkway link is still on the books, although there is a cutting made back in the 70s which would easily facilitate the link).

I have used Heyson street a bit latley as a way of avioiding the Tuggeranong Parkway to get from West Belconnen to Woden Hospital. Must amit never knew this road was even there linking Weston to Lyons. Not sure however if a link to the Parkway is really required at this point. The run down to Cotter road isn't that bad.

One thing that has me stumped though is why Devonport Street ends where it does. Getting slightly OT does anyone know where they intended to run it to? I also wonder who would use the bus stop near the ACTEW substation.

I used to catch the 214 to and from Philip College most days for 2 years too many years ago now and I think in that time I saw one person get off at that stop you mention. I'm guessing it was to go see their horse in the nearby agistment paddock.

Considering Kambah Road came off Cotter Road & continued along Sternberg Crescent. Another question could be, what was the original alignment &/or name of this road?

I've often wondered that too - looking at the map, is it possible they planned to link it up to Unwin Place?

I've only vague recollections of the Kambah Pool road before Tuggeranong was built, but I've seen very early maps (early 1900s) showing a road running from Long Gulley Lane (Road) to Kambah Pool via what may be the current route of Sulwood Drive and linking in to the existing remaining portion of the Kambah Pool Road.

Just had a look on ACTMAPi and the works down there are for some more housing. The Heysen/Hilder roundabout will also include a new access road to North Weston, Bellette St.

Also appears they're renaming Unwin Place to Unwin Street.

That housing sub division at Weston has been under construction for past 6 months or so, while upgrade of Unwin Place/Street has been in progress for several months...Unwin was closed to all traffic for two weeks ending last week, due to upgrading works.

So far, have seen nothing to indicate a connection to the Parkway is part of the works currently in hand.

Hopefully it remains that way. There is really no need for a direct connection from a housing estate to a road with a speed limit of 100km/h

This new development is being conducted by Defence Housing Australia. Details can be found at http://www.aph.gov.au/parliamentary_business/committees/house_of_representatives_committees?url=pwc/dhawestoncreek/subs/sub01.pdf

Here's hoping a certain national building supply company in Mitchell has/will pick up this work.
