Speed is believed to have been a factor in this morning's fatal car collision in Canberra's north.

Police say it appears a south-bound vehicle on Kuringa Drive crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming vehicle just after 4:00am.

The male driver of one of the cars died at the scene while the female driver of the other car in hospital with serious injuries.

Superintendent Mark Colbran says indications suggest the male driver was speeding in excess of 20 kilometres an hour over the limit.

Every second car travels 20km/h over the limit on that section of road, I frequently get tailgated doing 70km/h in that 60 km/h zone (assuming the incident occured between Tillyard Dr and Kingsford Smith Dr).

The bottom line is to slow down, and learn to manage a vehicle at such speeds. The road is there to share......

The incident occurred on the stretch between Owen Dixon Drive & Barton Highway, on the Spence side of the animal crossing bridge. The Police marks were still on the road this morning & going by those marks it is a strange one.
