Chief Minister and Minister for Transport, Jon Stanhope, today announced that work has commenced on a $2 million upgrade of a section of the Cotter Road.

"This upgrade to a two-kilometre stretch of pavement of the Cotter Road will provide motorists with a smoother and safer road that will be better able to resist the loads from trucks carrying materials to the new Cotter Dam," Mr Stanhope said.

"This project sees the ACT Government continuing to deliver on its $200 million delivery of new roads and road upgrades in the 2010-11 financial year."

The $2 million upgrade will take place along the stretch of the Cotter Road 1.5 kilometres east of the bridge over the Murrumbidgee to approximately 500 metres to the west and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2011.

Disruptions to traffic will be kept to a minimum, however one lane will need to be closed during the works. Motorists should consider using alternative routes to avoid this road and possible delays.

Mr Stanhope said the Cotter Road upgrade was just one of the road upgrades taking place in 2010-11.

Others included the $85 million Gungahlin Drive duplication; $34.5 million John Gorton Drive construction; $15 million Kings Highway upgrade; $15 million Clarrie Hermes Drive extension to the Barton Highway; and the $7.5 million Wells Station Drive upgrade.

In addition to this is the approaching commencement of the duplication of the Monaro Highway through Fyshwick (Canberra Avenue to Newcastle Street).

"These improvements underline the Government's commitment to providing Canberra with the required infrastructure to serve its ongoing, sustainable growth," Mr Stanhope said.

Work has started on this project.

What others may of noticed is work has begun at the Cotter Road/Kirkpatrick St intersection. Once this is complete, work will start to duplicate that section of Cotter Road. As a part of this work Unwin Place & Dixon Drive will be realigned to form a cross section. While this work is going on, those needing to access Orana School will be using a new road through North Weston. The work on the Cotter Road between Tuggeranong Parkway & Streeton Drive was opened before 06:30 this morning. This includes the 'B' light for north & south traffic. The bus stops were blade less when I went through at 06:25ish.

Yesterday am, I tried out the city-bound Bus only lane after dropping school kids @ Orana but the B cycle wasn't in operation.

O great, the 'B'cycle works on John Gorton Drive which has no buses (don't ask how I know-but does involve driving home at 23:00 one night). But the 'B' lights aren't working on Cotter Road, which has buses on it.
