The ACT Government has awarded a $21 million road contract to support the future traffic needs of north Gungahlin and the new suburb of Casey.

Chief Minister and Minister for Land and Property Services, Jon Stanhope, said work would start this month on the extension of Clarrie Hermes Drive from Kelleway Avenue in Nicholls to the Barton Highway.

"Gungahlin is one of Canberra's fastest growing communities, and this significant investment in transport infrastructure will support the future traffic needs of Casey, Nicholls and Ngunnawal," Mr Stanhope said.

"The existing 'T' intersection of the Barton Highway and Kuringa Drive will be upgraded to a signalisedfour-way intersection to include the new Clarrie Hermes Drive. Pedestrians and cyclists will also benefit from a new shared path along the extension.

"Every effort will be made to complete the work with minimal disruption to traffic."

Mr Stanhope said the project builds on the ACT Government's significant investment in Gungahlin infrastructure since coming to government with new facilities coming on line every few months.

"Most recently the Government completed the $1.8 million Flemington Road bus lane, which has decreased bus travel times from Gungahlin to the City, by around five to 10 minutes in peak times," Mr Stanhope said.

"Other vital infrastructure investments include the Gungahlin Child and Family Centre, the $72.4 million Gungahlin College, Canberra's first-ever rapid-transit bus service - REDEX - connecting the Gungahlin Town Centre to Kingston, and the $200 million GDE."

The extension of Clarrie Hermes Drive will require the relocation of the Bicentennial National Trail. The new trail will be built along the extension, separate to the shared path, and include three equestrian crossings on Kuringa Drive, the Barton Highway and Clarrie Hermes Drive.

Other works include a bus stop at the intersection of Clarrie Hermes Drive, Kelleway Avenue and Overall Avenue, noise walls and landscaping.

The contract for the work was awarded to Cut and Fill Pty Ltd and is due for completion in mid 2012.

King of Buses

They're finally extending Clarrie Hermes Dr which is good. Though it will possibly create a slight increase of traffic along th Barton Hwy. Though is the bus stop to become a Terminus? If so, maybe ACTION have decided Gungahlin need xpressos other than the 757.

Finally something for North Gungalin, it's been sort of a barren wasteland for transport.

Wouldn't be surprised if house prices in Casey increased with a nice new little shortcut onto the highway at their doorsteps.
