Bus 400

An ACTION bus driver was seriously injured recently when crushed between two buses.
Transport Workers Union organiser Klaus Pinkas said yesterday that because of the incident, the union wanted all buses fitted with audible reversing indicators.
It is not known whether an audible indicator would have prevented the accident but it highlighted the need for these inexpensive safety devices.
The driver had parked behind another bus in the refueling area at the Belconnen Depot.
As he crossed in front of the bus, the other bus has reversed, crushing the man against the bus.
ACTION acting general manager Tim Swift said the incident was subject to an internal investigation by ACT WorkCover.
"We have made some changes on refueling," he said.
Under ACTION's normal procedures, bus drivers were not suppose to reverse without assistance.
