Was driving to Sydney yesterday (mon 14th) and passed a bus in Transport NSW livery but with an Action front. Not sure if the Daewoo mentioned above or another bus coming to Canberra as a demonstrator. Cannot be 100% sure but think it was a CB80 body. Only got a glimpse through the bushes.

As in ACTION livery on the front but TfNSW livery on the rest? Weird...

Not quite.

No, you weren't imagining it. Yes, it is a CB80.

It should be in service soon (next week maybe), at which time all will be revealed.

The Love Guru

There are photos of above mentioned vehicle but won't be posted until the bus is released into service.
As Barry points out, until a public announcement is made staff are forbidden by guidelines to discuss internal matters.

I'm told it's a Scania CB80 in TfNSW livery but registered in Victoria...

I know no more. But hey, will it be 490 or 616 haha?

Barry Drive

As I said, all will be revealed when it enters service.

Which is another way of saying: who knows?

I'd say 616, as there was already a 490. And I've never seen a double up before (at least since I started examining the numbers).

671, 672, 800, etc.

EDIT: irrespective of the past, if the gallery is to be believed, it will be/is 616. http://www.actbus.net/gallery/index.php/ACTION-Buses-Current/Scania-K280UB

Just 001 to 175, 300 to 615, a handful of the 67 series, 800 and 888. But other than that..

Well I was just going off a few Demonstrators but now that you mention all of those  :P

On that note, we're straying a little far from the topic of this thread.

That's easily fixed. It's been changed on fleetwiki and gallery to use its Victorian registration: 1AP8ZM (which will be updated if it gets ACT plates)

What happened with the Daewood thing which was sighted at Tuggeranong? Is that in any way related to this new demo Scania?

Barry Drive

DAEWOO!

Depends on why it was here. Possibly to test its performance as stipulated in the ACTION RFT, since there may be a new tender for buses next year.

Whether Daewoo Bus Australia intend on loaning or leasing a demonstrator to ACTION is another question altogether.

I found the photo on Facebook, I didn't take it!

Buzz Killington

We know. However posting the photo elsewhere just encourages th photographer to continue to break the rules, which gives other enthusiasts a bad name.

Sylvan Loves Buses

So is it alright to take photos of the depots from up against the fences? just not from within the depots.

Barry Drive

^ Correct. As long as you are in a public place.

(Feel free to take photos where you want, but don't expect them to be displayed in ACT Bus if they involved entry into a restricted area without permission.)

If this isn't stated in the forum rules, it will be soon.

The Love Guru

Best policy is to only photograph in public areas. Ie if the bus in the Depot then wait for it to leave before getting a picture.

This saves a lot of headaches for enthusiasts.

I wouldn't recommend doing either, personally. If I drove past and saw someone taking photos through a fence, I'd think they were up to something.

Yes, I'm spying on naked buses :P
although, most of what I do is questionable (esp my bus hopping).

This is going way off-topic, sorry.
I just want to quickly ask a few quick things, with the CB80, what brand, if any, what similarities it has with the old 490 trial bus (as in the livery not the shape), and is it being used yet? Cause I'd love to find it, to ride it  ;)

Buzz Killington

As mentioned earlier in the thread, it's a Scania K280UB in Transport NSW livery.

Ex 490 was a K230UB, so this one has a bit more grunt.

It's not in service yet.

Sorry, I didn't notice that, got confused with all that Daewoo stuff.

What about the livery, can you tell me a bit about it, or should I wait to see it? I already know the design, cause I looked up Custom Coaches site ;)

It's green at the front with the orange lip (standard ACTION), and blue and white on the side.

Sylvan Loves Buses

hmm, interesting, so a bit like 490's front, with a Newcastle/Sydney Buses livery combined. Can't wait :D

Yes, so you said before.

But you will have to, as it won't appear before the new year.

As to what it looks like, this will help (but imagine an ACTION livery/bike rack on the front):

King of Buses

The Scania K280UB/CB80 demonstrator, BUS.490 will enter service soon - Monday apparently.

Bus 503

I have a few questions:

What is different about Bus 490 to all the other CB80 buses SCANIA make?

Is the front and back destination board a HANOVER LED like most of the other 'Green Buses' in the fleet?

What is the point of the trial? Are ACTION going to start buying K280UB SCANIA's?

Do we know whether the bus will be operating School routes?

Barry Drive

Scania don't make CB80 - that's the body. There will be both body and chassis differences. Chassis / engine wise, it's a K280 Euro V. So lower maximum power, but it may not be too noticeable. But with Euro V / EGR will have higher emissions and fuel consumption.

Yes, it does have Hanover displays all around.

Will ACTION buy K280s? Maybe. Who knows?

Will it do school runs? I would expect it on any shift currently done by Irisbuses and Belconnen low floors. Unlikely that it would be restricted to a single shift.

It is just another bus, people.

Barry Drive

This has been posted on twitter (photo was by someone who DOES have approval to be in a bus depot):

Don't think a "trial" has ever been mentioned.

Also:Don't think a "trial" has ever been mentioned.

If it isn't a trial bus that kind of seems odd they'd want a short term bus (which is implied by the fact it isn't in full ACTION livery).

As for the livery on it, it was nice they matched the green paint with the green front panel...
The TfNSW blue visible at the top up front too is weird...as is the green things down the side of the windscreen which are usually white...or just not there at all :P

In honesty though, the livery doesn't matter...it is a bus. If it goes where it is meant to, that's all that matters. But the ride should still be something a bit different for the enthusiasts :p

The Love Guru

I'll have the tissues on stand by for you guys when it enters service tomorrow.

As for the trial idea, that's wrong. If you think carefully, you may recall a low floor bus that is no longer in service and this has an effect on certain legally required %s. So whilst it is different, it is here for purpose until a long term decision is made.

So it acts pretty much the same as CB80 4878 at STA. Filling in for a dead bus even though it is different. Fair enough.

So has it been lent to ACTION, hired, or bought by ACTION, or do we not know?

The Fleetwiki says this:
QuoteBus 490 is a Scania K280UB 4x2 (Euro V plus EEV) bus, which is being leased from Scania Australia.

However, I don't understand why PUNCHBOWL BUS CO also had the bus from July to September of last year as the bus appears not to be a intended for a "trial" purpose.

Barry Drive

Not quite sure what you mean. Just because it's not a "trial" bus at ACTION, doesn't mean it wasn't a trial bus elsewhere.

Buzz Killington

For the sake of record keeping, 490 entered service on Monday, and has been leased to replace 300, which was withdrawn from service following fire damage.

You might spot it around Gungahlin in the afternoons this week.

And it has been doing an AM Red Rapid service too this week...

It'll be interesting to see if it appears on weekends given it is replacing an Iris...

The Love Guru

Weekends will depend upon how many drivers get trained to drive it. Yes you heard correct, training is required to drive it even though it is the same as what we already have with only very minor switch positional changes.
ACTION are extremely thorough in their training of drivers as you can see.

How is Bus 490 showing on TRANSIT TIMES? Does it show the bus's fleet-number or where the bus is on the route it's running? On NEXTTHERE, it doesn't show properly. You can't see where the bus is - the map always wrongly suggests it's at Tuggeranong depot. The fleet-number (obviously) doesn't show.

Shows up fine on Transittimes just like any other bus.

Bus 490 was operating 343 service to Fraser about 5pm from Westfield today (4th Feb)

Saw a NSW bus doing a 17 the other day, confused on why ACTON has it, let alone running it?

It would be a condition of the lease to retain the livery. Except at the front, of course.

Has to do with the pigment that is added to the paint at the time of application.
