The ACT Land Development Agency proposes to demolish the old bus depot buildings in Kingston and construct a new home for the popular Sunday markets in the same precinct, but closer to Lake Burley Griffin.

The prime real estate on Wentworth Avenue where the buildings now stand would then be sold.

''This valuable site represents excellent redevelopment potential and proceeds from the sale of the site fronting Wentworth Avenue will fund the construction of the new building [for the markets].''

Mr Stanhope guarantees the award-winning Old Bus Depot Markets will remain in the Kingston precinct whatever the decision..

Decision yet to be made on bus depot: Stanhope

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says no decision has been made on whether to preserve or demolish Canberra's old bus depot buildings.

The buildings on Wentworth Avenue at Kingston have been the home of the Old Bus Depot Markets for almost 15 years.

The ACT Land Development Agency (LDA) is considering whether to sell the site for development and move the markets to a new location.

Mr Stanhope says the old bus depot has a place in the hearts of many Canberrans but the cost of maintenance has to be considered.

"The ACT Government doesn't have a formal view on the future of the Bus Depot Markets at all," he said.

The reason for the speculated demolition may of been released this weekend. As the roof of the Old Kingston Depot is to be repaired/replaced over the new few weeks.

I'll try & dig out the article, but it looks like the Kingston Bus Depot is safe (for now).

Yeah, I recall reading something about sections of the roofing that contained asbestos were to be removed.
