Quote from: Sylvan Loves Buses on December 06, 2022, 11:49:45 PM..... With 5 different shifts I cross paths with, I'm confident I can ride each of the depots Renaults at least one more time.
Time is running out, so how is that working out?

Sylvan Loves Buses

I have a new workout for the current network which involves me getting up to 15 different Renault's in a single day. I've since only run it twice with each resulting in 12 different Renaults, but I think I have caught 70% of the remaining Renault fleet at least once so far this year.
I have 3 choir nights a week now, so by the time I hit Thursday I'm pretty pooped to want to do a 12+ hour Renault run. While I don't run this 'shift', I do what I can to ride the 71s that have Renault's on them. They don't exactly service at the most convenient times for all my activities each week, but they're there and that's what matters.

962 (42L) - Holy crap that route is disgustingly long and confusing. 62 minutes from Belconnen Community to Belconnen Community, what an oof that is. Had to kill an hour and well... at least it was a Renault and I sat up the back so all the juveniles that got on couldn't for once, ha ha! More fresh air for me with the windows open and less vandalism on the old girls' seat backings.
628 (R3S)

Both Renault's were ones I hadn't yet ridden this year so yay - 1 from each depot too!

Now Belconnen Interchange.

42 came about from efforts to reduce bus numbers using Fraser West Terminus. It is not the whole story. Check out route 40. Between them they provide clock and anticlockwise services meaning the practical routed length for most users is a maximum of just over 30min. Not so unusual after all.
(For a truly long time try an R2 incorporating a school diversion or a peak hour R2 between Fyshwick/Fraser West. Regrettably(?) the single Renault trip disappeared with the TT change.)

I don't like the 40/42 setup, but it's obviously not designed with end to end travel in mind

Having now ridden in new electric Yutong buses several times, and with an opportunity for direct comparison with Scania - Bustech diesel (696), I have revised my perceptions. Seated these latter times more in the middle of the electric buses, the warming tone is less intrusive and, secondly, the ride is better than the preceding trial buses and closer to that of the diesel bus, but with minor jiggles still apparent. (One driver did remark however that there is a lot of reflection of bumps etc into the steering wheel.)

Wow, what a way to start the day. I usually only expect the one bonus bus but today I got two!
Tell me, can you see 980 in this fog? No, me neither. I had to HEAR it coming this morning, could not see it until it was like 50 meters away from me. One thing for sure, the sound of the Renault's is one thing I think a lot of us will miss.

980 (71N)
617 (902E) - That's twice in 2 days I've caught that one now.
459 (R2N)
306 (R4S) - Damn... A Renault on an R4 is unusual, but an Iris is something else... something very special.

I think you might find that Iris are normally sometimes to be found on R services incorporating Belconnen Depot shifts. But still going to be rare as they are a very small fleet of only 18 operational. Even the Renault remaining fleet is much larger at 28 currently operational.

Sylvan Loves Buses

Since the interim network stopped, I got use to the idea that I would no longer have a reliable Renault/Iris 71-R6 conversion service to choir rehearsals on Monday/Wednesday evenings. I was running late tonight and ended up taking a slight detour because of one of these buses, but again I got something very unexpected. I don't bother checking Anytrip for R4/5s, maybe I should...

939 (R3) R3 is my 'home' route. First Renault ridden on R3/315 since 963 17/9/18 on a 315; and on 15 since 910 10/4/19 (and PR3 111 18/2/19). Went back to mid 2018 with no bendy found on a 15.
So a bendy, tag steer, and PR2 all on an R3 in the one day! Had come to believe I would never ride a Renault on an R3, having only previously sighted one on two, possibly 3, occasions on an R3.

Unexpected Renault on a 56 last week followed by the newest of the new this week.

509 (R4N)
510 (R2S)
723 (56W)

First time on these new buses, although I'm a little confused again as to what buses these are. Are they Bustech, Precision Bustech or are they something else entirely...? I'd normally figure this out by now for my log book stuff, but although they sound and look the same (excluding the aircon unit on the roof) I'm leaning towards thinking they're just a MKII Bustech because of the lack of Precision logos inside - I understand if there's nothing that makes them MKII's, this is just an assignment I'll make to categorise them in my log books.
Can someone clear this up for me please?

Snorzac

As a driver I refer to them as follows;
622-641 Generation 4 Mk I Bustech
642-651 Generation 4 Mk II Bustech
682-721 Generation 4 Mk III Precision Bustech
722-747 Generation 4 Mk IV BusTech

Generation 4 as the body is the fourth generation of the Bustech VST

Thanks, that's actually quite useful.

How the hell did I not notice that rear door until now. I could swear there was something different about this new batch and I finally saw it on Friday when I rode 722 (had to check some photos of the others to be sure it wasn't just 722). I rode 723 a week prior and didn't notice this wtf.
(to avoid stealing someone else's photo cuz I haven't taken any yet)

For someone who focuses on the looks of buses over most other things, I'm a little embarrassed. At least now I'll have a way to tell the difference when I draw them.

Sylvan Loves Buses

#639
Everyday, but for me at least, very few buses I get now are worth a mention - I usually only bother if I get something special or unexpected. I think the rest of the board members are either no longer in Canberra or are bus drivers so they're too busy to be on here.

Busnerd

I just drive my car and haven't caught PT for a while as I haven't needed to.

triumph

Quote from: Busnerd on June 18, 2023, 02:50:57 PMI just drive my car and haven't caught PT for a while as I haven't needed to.
Quite understand. Perhaps I should clarify.
We have one car between us. I use it locally when convenient, but try to avoid frittering fuel, and wear and tear on local travel (eg regular trips to Hughes from where I live is about 40km return each time, so bus when practicable). I have the advantage of not usually being under the pump, time wise. Local car travel in Canberra we have found, adds up quickly. Previous lives being in rural towns where almost everything was within easy walking distance. So we try to keep the local usage down in favour of longer trip needs. (For example, topped up car Thursday evening and again 800km later, today.)
As would be inferred from the thread, I often take the oppportunity to co-ordinate needed bus travel with transport interest travel.
What really worries me though, is that a younger cohort of bus enthusiasts seem to be missing from the Forum. Covid seems to be having some long term effects on hobby/enthusiast interests.

Busnerd

I feel the days of forums are behind a lot of the younger generation who seem to spend all their time on Instagram and TikTok rather than being interested in actual proper discussion replaced by photos or short videos and abbreviated text. I wonder if these generations will have difficulty in their futures being able to communicate appropriately.

triumph

What PT didn't I get today? Too damn cold, used the car for Hughes trip...
