Any else noticed, or has information on the mass of planes flying low over Tuggeranong Valley today? I've heard at least 50 so far today, presuming at first that they were Army/Air Force fly-overs, but I've been hearing and looking up the past few hours, and have been noticing small single-seater and crop-dusting styled planes.

Saw what I assume was a commercial airline pass over just a moment ago (blue based large plane). Are pilots asked to fly low due to the smoke or something? and if so, why only start this now, and not so over the past 3 months when the smoke/haze has been so much worse?

I think you'll find the smaller planes are spotter planes - ie looking for flare-ups.  The defence aircraft would be doing the same but some of the egg beaters would also be looking to douse any potential fires.

The larger commercial type of aircraft is a best described as a water bomber and it would be dropping fire retardant over fires.

Check the news or have a read on the-riotact and you'll see some great imagery.
