Title: Gungahlin-Civic Trams
Post by: smitho on June 08, 2013, 11:44:09 PM
Latest Budget funding for ACT light rail planning has brought forth (again) local TV stations repeating old footage of what Capital Metro light rail would look like down the Northbourne Ave median strip ....

Curious impression is that these trams wouldn't need overhead electrical infrastructure....no messy wires or stanchions to spoil the aesthetics!

Trams of this kind actually exist in places like east Germany, where little diesel engines are fitted to "bi-modal trams" to enable them to run over rail tracks beyond the reach of the tramway electrical infrastructure....actually, not a bad, low cost option.

Perhaps they could use a system of cables and pulleys like on skilifts.

Like the old Melbourne cable tram network....on similar lines, there are European tramlines which have underground electrical power supplies; a pretty expensive option.
