The NSW part rules out the former.. I don't think it's Gungahlin and given the Desto is 888, and the Gaol Routes are 88 and 988, and given Martin's laconic sense of humour, I suspect he is referring to the AMC, which leads me to guess:

Also, Lanyon Dr has a bit of an identity crisis. Some signs on the ACT portion of the road refer to it as Tharwa Road, others Lanyon Dr, but it is definitely Lanyon Dr on the NSW side of the border, where I believe the bus is.
And if I'm wrong, well.. given the facts at hand you have to admit I make a convincing argument.

Correct.
The 888 wasn't (supposed to be) referring to the AMC, '800' route numbers are used in Queanbeyan so it partially referring to that.
