Infrastructure / Re: Infrastructure Discussion
Last post by Bus 400 - April 25, 2026, 04:04:35 PM
Bus drivers exiting the layover near Platform 14 at Woden always had to watch out for buses coming around the corner & for people running for buses on Platforms 9-12. That's besides people sneaking around the old Police Station & crossing near Platform 9 to access Callam St. Let's not forget the many near misses & accidents at the intersection of Callam & Bradley St where the stop line was further back. Where buses dropping off on Platform 8 had to watch out for buses entering the Interchange.

I checked out the new Interchange. Personally I think Platforms A & B should have signs saying "Belconnen/City Rapid" & "Tuggeranong Rapid". I'd also probably make Platforms 1 & 5 as Special/School Services Platforms. Moving the arrivals drop off to Platform 2. Playing with the platform departures so the 64, 65, 70 & 71 leave from the same platform, making the Cooleman Court platform. But then again I still want the Corinna Street stop reopened.

From an enthusiast POV. There's lots of spots to photograph buses & if a special bus is coming through Woden, you can't be on the wrong platform or wrong end. Next job is to make Woden Buses Great Again.

Yeah the old Belconnen Interchange was long too, but at least you didn't have to cross to get to buses because they were either side of the walkways

I'm guessing you've never disembarked a 333 at Belconnen Interchange Platform 16 and had to connect to a bus departing from Platform 2 (in 2 minutes). At least it was downhill.

Quote from: Barry DriveFor Photo of the Month, December, the bonus category will be Woden Temporary Interchange...
...Since it will be (eventually) closing

When I first read this back when Barry posted it I thought "heh yeah, not soon enough...", but since then I've now used the new interchange and I've changed my mind. I got off to connect with a bus this evening and although I watched as it was being built, I may have had misgivings, but it did not fail to disappoint. Everything I thought that could go wrong, has happened, and them some. What is it with the designers now days making interchanges as long as possible, making it impossible to connect with services from one end of an interchange to another and basically making it a disability/convenience unfriendly environment?
Seems like the days of buses being on the outside of walkways (excluding the City) for interchanges is a thing of the past. The old Woden interchange may have had flaws for sure, but dashing for a bus where the likelihood of being run over wasn't a constant thing like it is now at basically every interchange except Tuggeranong. In my opinion, the shelters should be where the road is, the road should be where the shelters are and Platforms 1 and 8 should not be there - this would've truly merged the so called 'transport interchange' into a real hub (regardless of when the LRVs arrive). Also, I don't recall noticing any trolley racks again smh.

My first look through of the platform arrangement last week not only pissed me off because of the 'A/B' platforms, but I kept getting tripped up by where the numbers are. I'm so use to numbers following a linear direction, but this interchange scraps this idea and continues the sequence in the same spot as Plt 1 - imo, Plt 8 should be where 5 is. Belconnen and City still does it, why can't they be consistent... [REDACTED].

Do I go on about the shelters and lack of proper seating and pathing? No, because I'm going to give myself a brain aneurysm if I do.
What's up with the new pedestrian lights, did a new law get passed that I was not aware of? Sure, (other than me) basically no one in Canberra pays attention to pedestrian traffic laws, but it would've been nice to know that there's a 20 second counter on the red signal now instead of it blinking. The Green lasts for barely 2 seconds before the timer shows up which makes me wonder now when the actual right time is to cross to avoid copping the hypothetical $85 fine.

Oh sorry, you were expecting a positive review? My bad...
It's nice to not get delayed to/from Hindmarsh Drive anymore, it's nice to have more visible signage, it's nice that the TC officers are spending less time on their asses and not hiding in the office, it's nice to have realistic crossings after every platform instead of at either end, it's nice to have more glass panels on the sides of the shelters to hide from the wind (because that's the only weather that Canberra ever experiences)... and there's so much more but the sarcasm will only get worse.

Quote from: L94UBbusfan on April 17, 2026, 09:19:23 PMPurely speculation, but what is likely to happen is that these 30 buses will go to Tuggeranong because there is plenty of space there (a very small number could go to Woden, but it's unlikely) and Belconnen will probably get some Bustechs to even the numbers out (presumably they'll return 702-708, but hopefully they make the numbers nice and go 700-708 instead). They may even have enough resources to be able to transfer some MANs to training duties, since the Renaults can't go forever (not to mention the potential double up of BUS 930).
It will also depend upon where the additional drivers will be allocated, however I would agree with the above. The first few new buses may go to Woden, depending on available space.

There's also the question of when the additional services will be introduced, considering the delivery schedule won't be more than 1 per week. Without knowing when the contract might actually be signed, the earliest they could increase services is Term 2 in 2027 (depending on driver recruitment), but more likely Term 3 (mid-2027). Worth remembering that the Commonwealth Ave bridge works are expected to finish by end of 2027 - so another timetable change will be due early 2028.
