General Discussion / Re: Fare Evasion crackdown
Last post by Bus 400 - April 15, 2026, 10:02:05 PM
Whilst the last time I  actually saw someone checking tickets on ACTION Buses was during the old Wayfarer days. I don't think I ever saw them issue tickets. Pasengers would directed to scan their ticket through the machine or buy a ticket or occasionally kicked off. That's if they hadn't already snuck out the back doors & legged it.

If I recall, back in the ACTION Authority days, ticket inspectors were also either also trainers or involved in the bus network/timetabling. So there'd be weeks or months of no inspectors.

Fleet / Re: 30 new electric buses (202...

It's a reasonable guess. But it's probably incorrect.

While there has been no announcement of their intentions, the Government is wanting to increase driver numbers (and therefore the bus fleet size) in 2027.

There's also no need for any further bus withdrawals until 2029 and, provided they actually get around to installing more chargers at Tuggeranong, there's plenty of room in the depots for 30 additional buses.

The Labor party policy was for 50 new buses during this parliamentary term: so a further 20 might be announced for 2028, and these might be replacements.

Is it a reasonable guess that these electric buses will start replacing the Diesel MANs?

Fleet / 30 new electric buses (2026-27...

Last year's budget included the purchase of 30 battery electric buses.

I've been keeping watch for a tender or announcements. In the last sitting week of the ACT Assembly, Chris Steel has given the best indication of the status of these buses:

QuoteWe looked at the options and, based on the information that was provided by Transport Canberra's contracted bus supplier, VDI Australia, Transport Canberra confirmed that buses could not be delivered to Transport Canberra earlier than six months from contract signing, with the flow of vehicles then being a minimum of one per week.

He's also mentioned that the procurement is still underway.

So this pretty much confirms they will purchase additional Yutongs by amending the current contract. The six month waiting period means no delivery before October at the earliest.

Edit to add: the six months should also provide time to commence installation of additional charging equipment at Tuggeranong Depot. (Note: there is no tender yet for this process.)

My old my-way card also was checked quite often on light rail services. I don't think there was any technical reason for routinely not doing it on buses.
I have also noticed the light rail staff are often watching to see that the validator is used.

The LRV guys had something for the old system, got mine checked a couple of times with that, but nothing since the new system.

As mentioned in the "What PT" thread I got my ticket checked for the first time ever in Canberra on Thursday, and I have seen many anti-fare evasion ads on buses as well as transit enforcement officers at most major interchanges, so yes, it seems like they are doing something about fare evasion finally. I'd assume that fare checks weren't possible on the old MyWay system (please prove me wrong if that's incorrect) and now that MyWay+ is working much more consistently they are now able to accurately check tickets. Still yet to see a fine handed out though, although I did witness somewhat of a warning given to a passenger whose card wasn't working on Thursday.

Routes and Timetables / Re: Network update from Monday...

Re routes 54 and 55. I hadn't noticed this either. (Unfortunately, recent usage was from the Canberra Centre.) The change is logical to accommodate the new Rimmer St starting point and use of the normal Alinga St route. Is the phasing of traffic lights more favourable through the Alinga St route than the Rudd St route? Traffic also seems to be an issue at times at the Bunda - Mort Sts intersection for the right turn needed by buses going this way.

Perhaps there was/is signage at the former platform redirecting customers? Agree that the users should apparently have been better informed. Hurrying to the wrong platform can cost a missed service.

Routes and Timetables / Re: Network update from Monday...

I had to check my emails to be sure, as far as I can tell there was no information provided about it. I just checked the Wayback Machine to see the timetables and maps on the website between 2 February and March (as it's since been updated) and strangely I cannot access any of the new timetables as it keeps redirecting to 2025 versions - even when I put the new link in.
I don't ride those routes very often, but even though I'm in the City a lot, it still took me 5 weeks after the new network to notice that those routes were going towards platform 9 after spotting them turning off of Rimmer street instead of going straight like the ANU Loop - as I would've assumed they'd do.
