Bus 400

Here's one to get the mind going.

So almost 100 years ago, Canberra City Omnibus Service ran buses from Kingston to Ainslie. Some routes went via Civic, others went around Civic.

For my first little game. How would you go from Fraser West Terminus to Lanyon without stopping at or going through an Interchange? This includes Kippax,  Cooleman & Tuggeranong Interchanges.

I have a rough idea, probably take all day.

I'll allow a walk to the next closest bus stop.

I assume all the fake ones like erindale and barton are included. I have a way that only involves crossing the road to parallel bus stops:

41 to 4071/4070 (Copland Dr)
R3 to 4072/4073 (Copland College)
43 to 4145/4146 (Emu Bank)
901 to 4971/4982 (Eardley St)
R9 to 5520/5521 (Belconnen Way)
32 to 4271 (Coulter Dr)
47 to 2832/2833 (Holborow Ave)
66 to 2071/2072 (Launceston St)
62 to 2041/2040 (Wilkins St)
61 to 2095/2382 (Yamba Dr)
72/76/77 to 1170/1174 (Sternberg Cresc)
74 to 2713/1375 (Athllon Dr)
80 to 1215 (Lanyon Market Place)

Depending on the time of day and if all the connections go well that should take roughly 5:20 hours.

Barry Drive

Similar concept, but different routes (mostly):

R2 Fraser West to Southern Cross Drive / O'Reilly St (cross road)
44 Southern Cross Drive to Higgins Shops (cross road)
45 Higgins Shops to Coulter Dr (any stop- cross road)
47 Coulter Dr to Denman Prospect/ Holborow Av (cross road)

From here, either Sylvan's solution above, or the following:

R10 to Albert Hall - walk to Langton Cres (if not permitted, continue to London Cct)
57 Parkes to Yamba Drive (cross road)
72/76/77 Yamba Dr to Sternberg Cr (cross road)
74 Sternberg Cr to Ashley Dr (after Clift Cres) (cross road)
R5 Ashley Dr to Lanyon Mkt Place

Bus 400

Similar, to different to what I thought.

I was Similar to Barry as far as Deman Prospect.

Then I was

Cross Felstad Vista
66 to Mulley St (Cross road)
65 to Weston Creek Terminus
64 to Namatjira Dr (Cross road)
70 to Soward Way
81 to Lanyon

I would do the same, but from the Albert Hall, I would get the 180 or 181 straight to Lanyon (granted this would only be an option during Monday to Friday peak)

I tried to configure my own concept, but what I found was that it's pretty much impossible to not go via Denman Prospect. Since the discontinuation of the Free City Loop in 2019, there is no way to avoid City Interchange when travelling from one side of the city to the other. I thought about the 31 from Aikman Dr to Ainslie Ave, but it goes through Dickson Interchange.

Sylvan Loves Buses

Yeah right, there's a gridlock between Dickson and the City, that sucks. I don't even think there's a way around that using Queanbeyan or NSW coach/buses.

A whacky way to avoid West Tuggeranong altogether would be to get the 902 from Yamba and connect with a 182 from the stop near the Fyshwick Markets.

Barry Drive

Because I want to see how long this actually takes, I'm checking these scenarios against the actual timetable using 9am as a starting time.

'Barry Drive' method to Denman Prospect
R2 departs 0902, arrives SC Dr (4327) 0916
Stop 4328: 44 departs 0935, arrive Higgins Shops (4342) 0947
Stop 4341: 45 departs 0952, arrive Coulter Dr (4274) 1006
Stop 4273: 47 departs 1007 *, arrive Holborow Av (2832) 1021

* while this is possible on paper, it may not allow enough time to cross road and doesn't allow for any time deviation (late or early running). The more likely outcome is a wait time of an hour for the next Route 47.

'Sylvan Love Buses' method to Denman Prospect
-- with some modifications

41 departs 0903, arrives Copland College, Verbrugghen St (4265) 0915
walk to Copland Drive Stop 4073: 43 departs 0943, arrive Emu Bank (4145) 0956
walk to Eastern Valley Way Stop 5521: 32 departs 1013, arrive Coulter Dr (4271) 1025
Stop 4271: 47 departs 1107, arrive Holborow Av (2832) 1121

Thus far, both options provide the same outcome.

'Barry Drive' method to Lanyon
Stop 2833: R10 departs 1124, arrive Albert Hall (2248) 1145
walk to Langton Cres Stop 1778: 57 departs 1206, arrive Yamba Dr (2094) 1234
Stop 2379: 77 departs 1245, arrive Sternberg Cr (1170) 1258
Stop 1174: 74 departs 1258 or 1328 *, arrive Clift Cr (1487) 1351
Stop 1841: R5 departs 1404 *, arrive LMP 1413

* Later departure chosen to allow sufficient transfer or walking time. Earlier arrival time may be possible.

'Sylvan Loves Buses' method to Lanyon
Stop 2833: 66 departs 1124, arrive Launceston St (2071) 1143
Stop 2072: 62 departs 1203, arrive Southlands * (2045) 1220
Stop 2044: 61 departs 1241, arrive Yamba Dr (2095) 1256
Stop 2382: 76 departs 1306, arrive Sternberg Cr (1170) 1318
Stop 1174: 74 departs 1328, arrive Athllon Dr (2713) 1403
Stop 1375: 80 departs 1406, arrive LMP 1433

* changing transfer point does not alter timing

'Bus 400' method to Lanyon
Stop 2832: 66 departs 1129, arrive Mulley St (2112) 1150
Stop 2113: 65 departs 1208, arrive Chapman Terminus 1219
Stop 2139: 64 departs 1224, arrive Namatjira Dr (1269) 1231
Stop 1264: 70 departs 1245, arrive Athllon Dr (2713) 1306
Stop 1375: 81 departs 1322, arrive LMP 1351

It's doable if you get off the LR at Phillip Ave or Swinden St & walk 1 bus stop to to Watson Shops or Melba St, Downer.

Remembering, it's called Barton Bus Station, not Interchange.

Sylvan Loves Buses

I don't even call it a bus station, it doesn't deserve that title.
