Sylvan Loves Buses

As some of you know I've been developing my own custom bus timetables since TC won't do them anymore. A lot of time goes into each timetable and I have managed to work out about a third of the network. These timetables designs are based of past timetable templates that I have scanned onto my computer from networks 1998-2002 (because these were the coolest and easiest to manage on Microsoft Paint).

If you would like a copy of any of these timetables, private message me for details. They're not quite a full size page (because most printers now days are annoying and don't print edge-to-edge anymore), but A4 will print a pocket-sized timetable and A3 will print bigger for those who have sight impairments. Of course I understand that most of you probably don't need them or won't use them as you guys all have mobile devices, but if you'd like one just for the hell of it I will also be bringing limited copies along to the tour tomorrow, as some people have already asked for some.

Timetables I currently have available are:
R5 (Network '99 design)
R6 (Network '99 design)
23/24/43 (2002 design)
32/47/903 (2002 design)
44/45/46 (2002 design)
50/51/53 (2002 design)
57/58 (2002 design)
60/61/62/902/831 (2002 design)
63/70/71 (2002 design)
72/73/77 (2002 design)
74/75/78/182 (2002 design)
South Tuggeranong (Depot/Bunnings) Corridor (1999/2000 design)

Route combos are chosen based on convenience, proximity logic and the amount of space available on the timetable itself. I may have added my own flair to the design of these timetables, but if you're concerned about how I acquired the information inside, everything is already publicly accessible via the online timetables and 3rd party apps. Some timetables have custom experimental timepoints, I'm open to feedback to whether these work or not, there may also be some mistakes on the times (I'm only human). Once a timetable is complete, I won't go back to correct the mistakes until a new network change. I have more corridor ideas in the works and plenty of the rest of the network to come (which will include 830 and 834). I also have plans to try to incorporate more designs from other networks such as 2005 and 2006, because there's some really cool designs out there.

Examples:

Sylvan Loves Buses

I've been sick the last few days, so good opportunity to work on some more timetables. The next batch that I have ready to go are:

R4 (Northbound only) (Network '98 design)
R4 (Southbound only) (Network '98 design)
30/31/901 (2002 design)

Had to split the R4 into 2 timetables as there were just too many times to fit into one. Will probably have to do the same with the R2. Also I believe I made an error above mentioning the designs of the rapids. They should be a rough copy of the network '98 design, not the '99.

Over the next few weeks I'll be looking into probably making these too:
R3 (Network '98 design)
R9 (Network '98 design)
18 (with 21/22 if they all fit) (2002 design)
54/55/834 (2002 design)
80/81 (with 180/181 if they fit) (2002 design)
These in my mind take priority over the rest of what's left, I may change my mind later and do up others instead.

If you'd like copies of these (or want one not on these lists) private message me. If you bump into me in public, I don't mind giving you the ones I carry with me (I can always print more).

Errors and feedback:
70/71/63
  • 2 time errors on custom timepoint (C) "St Thomas the Apostle Primary School" for route 70.
    Times read 1:49, 1:49, 2:49, 2:49. Should read 1:19, 1:49, 2:19, 2:49.
72/73/77
  • Custom timepoint (B) "Kirkton Street" does not work as intended. This timepoint will be changed and replaced with "Fincham Cres" and "Erindale Centre" for the next network.
  • Due to the lack of Anytrip, the northbound 77 bus allocations on Saturdays were not put in. Another route had this issue, don't remember which.
23/24/43
  • Alignment error in column 3 (From Belconnen) under timepoints (F) and (G).
R4 North
  • Might've been tripping, but I would swear some of the times on the Tuggeranong Interchange time board are different to the times online by 1-2 minutes (needs clarification).
60/61/62/831/902
  • That weekend thing with the Jail and Hume is confusing as hell.
57/58
  • Several arrival times at the bottom of column 1 (Woden-bound) for route 57 are incorrect, haven't checked what the times should be, but they're <20 minutes later than what's actually scheduled.
South Tuggeranong Corridor
  • Lack of a map is not necessary, but it's a pity not to include it.
R5
  • Time error and timepoint mistake on map fixed prior to handout.

If you spot any others (especially on the routes I barely use) please let me know.

A little looksie on the 57/58 for those who don't have the timetables but are interested to see what goes on inside. Can you guess what my custom timepoints are with just this snippet?

Must've been tripping or looking at the wrong timetable on the board (I hadn't yet created the R4 South yet, so it wasn't that). I've gone through the times and only one was wrong (by 1 minute). I've fixed that now.

Also for 70/71/63 - I may also replace timepoints (D) "Cooleman Court Departure" and (E) "Mount Stromlo High" with just "Cooleman Court". The intersecting at bus stops 1259/1263 seemed like a good idea in theory, but unless there's better connections next network, I think just putting everything at Cooleman will require less brain power to figure out the connections (it's like 5 minutes difference anyway).

In addition to creating brand new interchange maps for the network '98 design, I'm also thinking of adding interval estimates to bus stops on the maps at midpoints between timepoints. Whether this will help or not I will have to see, but it may be helpful both to make my life easier when creating more custom timepoints than necessary, but also to help navigate/connect with buses in the spaces where there aren't timepoints. I can fit a maximum of 9 timepoints in a column, adding "<- 5m~ ->" indicators on the maps could prove useful.

And this is what happens to a timetable when more than a whole column is left completely bare.

This is insanity, send help!

Damn these look so good and I have so many now I'm starting to reminisce my old collection. They're almost the same too minus the damage, doodles, stickers and blemishes (and that they're scaled down to the pocket-sized generation - we technically didn't have those till 2005).

...

Yes, that is a mock-up of the R1 with a lightrail on the front instead of a bus. That icon took me 5 hours to carve out :( .

So with all those I now have the following done (available for download):
R1 (Custom CMET Design)
R4 Northbound (Network '98 design)
R4 Southbound (Network '98 design)
R5 (Network '98 design)
R6 (Network '98 design)
23/24/43 (2002 design)
30/31/842/843/901 (2002 design)
32/47/903 (2002 design)
44/45/46 (2002 design)
50/51/53 (2002 design)
54/55/843 (2002 design)
57/58 (2002 design)
59/830/840X/844/844X (2002 design)
60/61/62/902/831 (2002 design)
63/70/71(2002 design)
72/73/77 (2002 design)
74/75/78/182 (2002 design)
80/81/180/181 (2002 design)
South Tuggeranong (Depot/Bunnings) Corridor (1999/2000 design)

Looking at doing these soon too, in no particular order (route combos subject to change):
R2 to Airport
R2 to Fraser
R3
R7
R9
18/21/22
64/65
66
76/79

In preparation for the new network I have reworked my bus icons a bit and added a new electric icon to indicate Woden depot runs.

Should go without saying, but for those who use my timetables know that the current ones will no longer work when Term 2 starts - I've gone through some of the new times and it's pretty clear that there's some differences. Keep/discard the old ones as you wish, the correct timetables will have 28 April 2025 (or similar) on them. Starting to work on them now, will hopefully have some/most ready by the commencement date (bus icons probably won't be available at first while the 3rd party tracking apps are still unavailable).

Sylvan Loves Buses

In preparation for the new network I have created every timetable from the Transport Canberra and CDC Canberra Networks. Unfortunately none will be ready by Monday, but I have all templates ready, including producing the corridor and new Queanbeyan timetables that are unique to those areas. ANU and my other activities come first of course, I will get these out as soon as I can (mostly because I rely on a few of them). Bus icon information may not be available at first.

To come...

Given what's happened with the bullcrap detouring around the adjusted Woden Temporary Interchange, I ran a little experiment to see how inefficient it truly is staying on an R4 to Woden waiting for it to get to the interchange after going around the world a few times.
On a weekday a few weeks ago I timed the R4 from bus stop 2592 to Woden plt 3, it took 4 minutes 50 seconds (not including the time it took the driver to tell his stupid MyWayMinus machine to hurry the f*** up and realise it was at the interchange) - and most of the lights were decent for once too, they're usually a lot slower.
Yesterday evening (Sunday), I got off at 2952 and scooted it as fast and abiding to the law as best as I could. I did it in 3 minutes 15 seconds. In fact the bus I got off of got to the interchange at the same time as me, but that was only because I delayed my departure from #2592 to write down something in my logbook and time the traffic light. That period was at least 2 minutes so that evens it out.
Keep in mind my scooter is not electric and I was pushing pretty hard against a headwind too. Obviously walking this distance works out to be roughly the same as the bus getting there, which is a bit ridiculous I must say.

Don't worry, excluding this I have expressed my concerns to Transport Canberra, whether or not they do anything about it, well we'll just have to see...
Reflecting on this situation, I have updated my timetables to include a warning within letting those who use them to know that you're probably going to miss connections that were previously possible. Transport Canberra have not appeared to make an effort to reflect this 5 minute disadvantage from what I have seen - the online timetables look unaffected, so typical...

I noticed above I left off the 56 from the 2002 list, my bad. At the moment of typing this post I have started to work on the 56 timetable, but after reviewing how few times there are on this route, I have elected to change 2 timetables in preparation for the adjusted Sunday timetable that's expected to occur sometime in Term 3. This adjustment may also affect a few other timetables, I will update this topic again if re-adjustments become necessary.

It will not be possible to fit all the new Sunday times onto the 59 timetable. So going forth:
59/830/840X/844/844X will become 59
56 will become 56/830/840X/844/844X
The 56 has considerably fewer times than the 59, this will free up space for the internal maps too.

With the Sunday timetable adjustment commencing tomorrow I'm rushing to get as many of the timetables that I had already completed ready for this. Unfortunately after reviewing a few routes I am going to have to do another overhaul of my combination structure as many of the combos I have will no longer fit.

The timetables that I will likely have ready for next Sunday will be:
R5
R9
18/21/22/842/843
19/20
56/830/840X/844/844X
60/61/62/831/902
80/81/180/181

These timetables might be possible asap too depending on how the adjusting goes:
R4 North
R4 South
25/26/27/28
30/31/901

These timetables will no longer be possible and I'm very annoyed. I'm likely going to need to create a few additional timetables because of this:
44/45/46
50/51/53
63/70/71
72/73/77

For those using my timetables, the times and symbols for the Weekday and Saturday timesheets remain accurate. You can continue to use them whilst I work on the update as long as you know that the Sunday times are mostly incorrect.
I've also been very busy lately which is why I haven't been able to get as many timetables out as I would've like to.

Sylvan Loves Buses

In that week I managed to get these ready (minus a couple sunday symbols):
R1
R4 North
R4 South
R5
R9
18/21/22/842/843
19/20
25/26/27/28 (this one took way too long to make idk why)
30/31/901
56/830/840X/844/844X
60/61/62/831/902
72/73
80/81/180/181

Those who have asked for these will receive them shortly. I'm trying to get more done, but I'm busy these next 2 weekends too. If I miss 1 shift on anytrip that does not pass over a route I've previously done, then like the R4s the timetable has to wait an extra week to be completed.

Was going through the 20s yesterday and holy moly I don't envy the belco drivers, some of those shifts have back to back to back to back 19/20/21/22/25/26/27/28s. I thought seeing 6x back to back R2s was bad, yikes. I say this just because those timetables in particular are basically belco-only shifts which makes the filling in of the symbols a little boring. However, I must check every time manually because unlike in the past where the occasional tuggy shift would be up there (there no longer appears to be), there's at a couple woden shifts that do. Unlike the 56 timetable which has just about everything lol.

60/61/62/831/902
72/73
80/81/180/181

Following along from this, I've almost* got these ready now too:
R8
23/24/43
40/41/42 (currently working on)
70/71
74/75/78/182

Being busy (busy for someone who doesn't work) certainly takes its toll. I would've liked to have had more done by now, but that's just how it goes. I'm also doing them in a random order this time to make things more interesting - seems like the random number generator is favouring the Belconnen/Gungahlin numbers more though...

Anytrip (plus the other tracking apps as far as I've noticed) has stopped showing all shift information, was great while it lasted. Now I have to go back to the old ways of being around/awake at the times the routes show to see what buses are on them (or at least within 6 hours before the data gets wiped). This downgrade has also broken the Saturday midnight runs, they used to show up as being 1440~ minutes late (because the data for some whack reason has them as being 'Saturday' runs even though they technically run on Sunday mornings), now they don't show at all. So when I say above that these next few are 'almost' ready, it's because I've got symbols for every time except the runs after midnight smh... It's annoying enough when I fill out a timetable and 1 or 2 buses with their garbage notmyway machines don't show and I have to wait another week to fill them in (or an Element is on it every weekday ugh), but not showing at all takes the cake.
Thinking back I probably should have written down all the runs while I could've, not just the ones I was doing at the time. Oh well...

Sylvan Loves Buses

So the latest update is that I've adjusted the Woden minimaps to reflect the last change to the roads. This is not a significant change so I've left the 'effective' dates on the timetables to continue reflecting the Sunday times adjustment. Unfortunately whilst the online data for the 3rd party trackers is still broken, some of these timetables will lack a bus symbol on Saturday runs that depart after midnight.
If you have been sent digital copies of these and I have neglected to send you an updated timetable please let me know.

I will print as many of these as I can on mass in preparation for both the CTM BBQ (I assume that's still happening) and Gas Bus Tour for those wanted printed copies. The routes I've done now include:
R1, R4N, R4S, R5, R6, R8, R9
18/21/22/842/843
19/20
23/24/43
25/26/27/28
30/31/901
32/47/903
40/41/42
56/830/840X/844/844X
60/61/62/831/902

70/71
72/73
74/75/78/182
80/81/180/181
832/835/836/838

Currently working on 54/55/834

I had a little break, but if I can keep this pace up I may be able to get the whole network done for once and get on with attempting the Corridor timetables before the next significant network change *cough* the "Commonwealth Avenue Mayhem" update. No doubt I'll have to rework a couple more timetables when this change occurs.

What's left?
R2N, R2S, R3, R7, R10

Wow, what a journey it's been. I look back to 2021 when I made my first photocopy of an official 2002 bus timetable in prepartion for the ex-717 Composition Tour that is yet to happen. Had a lot of fun making this, it's saddens me that this'll likely never happen now. The tour may still happen one day, but for the moment I will share what could've been, had the rain not ruined the day that was to be.
.

It really pisses me off that the government shows a complete disregard for the less-abled patrons. The mentality of 'everyone should own a phone' nowdays is so very wrong. Yes, I could own a phone, yes I could own a car, yes I could have a life, but unfortunately money does not grow on trees in Canberra.
I was finding ways of managing the network for some time including one time during covid lockdown getting the 'whole lot' from a operations manager - only to find out several years later that I was using the 'Master Timetable'. I was not suppose to have that... it was super handy though, knowing where all the Renault's were going to be made life somewhat less sh*t.

In late 2022, the struggle was getting to me so I thought... "Well if they're not going to do it anymore, then I will". Even though the effort involved making all these bloody timetables is absolutely ridiculous, the results and usefulness thanks to the adoption of combination timetables (multiple routes per timetable) means I'm carrying around a handful of timetables instead of a literal BRICK. You go up to a Transport Office and ask them that you want them to print you the whole network, but they're going to say "no". Do you know why? If you print each page as it's laid out on the website, it's over 300 pages... I'm not going to carry a literal ream of paper with me every day, that's stupid (I see elderly people doing it too, it saddens me to see it). At least when I had the master timetable it didn't have all the useless information on it... some maps would've been handy though.

The look of my timetables has evolved somewhat over the years for which I've shown some of those adjustments on this thread. Major overhauls of the maps, the bus symbols and how many routes can fit into each. Countless hours lining up the pngs so when they print double sided, there's nothing sticking out (this still happens sadly) and a completely rewitten/proofread Discalimer and How To Use section to make it easy for anyone to read/use. The knowing of the bus types from the master timetable is what originally gave me the idea to include bus symbols in the timetables. Knowing if your bus is Wheelchair capable or doesn't have a bike rack or which depot it's coming from (that one's for the enthusiasts) I think is a great thing to include on a timetable, it just sucks that TC have such a hard-on for withholding this information to such a degree - the other states certainly aren't as bad. Finding Anytrip was a lifesaver when it came to finding the buses on the routes. Combining Anytrip and the fleet wiki makes the last part of the timetable design (kinda) fun. Obviously it's a little harder now with half the Woden fleet not showing up all the time, was easier a couple years ago. "Oh no, the bus isn't showing up... must be a Renault or Iris" - simpler times.
This latest batch of timetables certainly wasn't always easy to produce and I'm really hoping this next network sticks for the full 2 year period of the bridge works, because I need a break from all these changes - I'm sure a lot of Canberran's feel the same way too.

A bunch of you I'm sure have the original Network '98 bus pack. I may have 2 of those packs, but unfortunately they were incomplete packs. I'm not going to cry about it though as I finally have my own bus timetable pack. Tada...

That is a lot better/lighter than a ream. 30-something timetables squished together combining however many routes the current network has, including Queanbeyan and LRV services. Easy to use templates gathered from Networks '98 through to 2002, utilising the compact 'pocket sized' design from 2005-2010?.
The next network is going to probably suck, but I'm happy I've finally got a network done... for once. I've yet to explore updated Corridor timetables, I'll attempt to dabble in a couple of those during the break.

Damn they look good. I love the shock on peoples faces when I tell them I'm still using Microsoft Paint to do these :D
A couple look small, these are timetables I've finished recently that do not include bus symbols. Given how unreliable the data tracking is at the moment and given the holidays + a new network are on the way, I decided not to bother. Wanted to get the network out of the way, but I'll try to do it for the next one.
