Cooma-Monaro Shire Council and Deanes Transit Group are reportedly planning a survey to gauge the level of interest in a Canberra to Cooma commuter bus service.

The survey would include questions regarding where and when commuters would like to travel.

Deanes spokesperson Jereme Wee briefed the council at its monthly meeting on the requirements. Their current role in the plan was as a 'dialogue partner' and there were no immediate plans to begin a trial service.

Mr Wee said that the company would help council formulate a survey, which they had done with several other councils in the region.

"We are helping council gauge usage of a service and we have done this for other centres too," he said. "Any progress hinges on the results from the survey."

In addition, he said that priority should be given to currently operating bus companies in Cooma to provide the service.

Deputy mayor Martin Hughes, who has for a long time supported such a bus service, said he would meet with Deanes to develop the survey, but cautioned there was still a lot of work to do before any progress was made.

In recent years, Bowmans ran a commuter service between Canberra and Goulburn, which was eventually scrapped due to poor patronage.
