• The route's origin can be traced to November 1967, when an un-numbered service operated from Aranda to Lyneham, where it connected to Route 029 (1961) to the City.
• The un-numbered route was extended to Macquarie (Bennelong Cr and Lachlan St) in January 1968, and operated from the City.
• The service was formally designated as Route 40 on 18 March 1968, operating from the City to Macquarie Shops.
• From June 1969, the route was modified to operate via Dryandra St instead of Boldrewood and Miller Streets.
• The route was extended to:
  • Scullin from 9 December 1968.
  • Higgins in March 1969.
  • Holt (Starke and Macnaughton) in February 1971
  • Holt (Beaurepaire and Southern Cross) in November 1971
  • Macgregor Shops in November 1972
  • Macgregor Terminus in August 1974
• Peak extensions operated to Russell via Macarthur Ave (bypassing the City) operated between approximately 1972 and 1977.
