Greens secure car pooling and transit lane improvements

The ACT Greens today used an Assembly motion to secure improvements for transit lane planning and car pooling in the ACT. The ACT Government must now explore ways to introduce an ACT Government wide car pooling service, and develop formal guidelines for using transit and bus lanes.

"We were disappointed that the Government removed the T2 transit lane on Adelaide Avenue without conducting a proper analysis of how it would impact on Canberra's transport patterns," said ACTGreens Transport spokesperson, Amanda Bresnan MLA.

"We agreed to reinstate the T2 lane.

"The Greens' amendments additionally require the Government to conduct an evidence-based assessment of whether the lane will operate best as a T2, T3, T4 or bus-only lane. It will report back to the Assembly early next year.

"This paves the way for a future, evidence-based decision that best encourages sustainable transport on the road.

"Our amendments also require the Government to develop and publish guidelines for the appropriate locations and uses for transit lanes and bus lanes in the ACT, which take into account safety, congestion, and transport sustainability goals.

"I am pleased that our amendments also brought a renewed focus to car pooling, which can play an important part in making us a more sustainable city.

"The Government will now have to develop options to introduce an ACT Government wide car pooling service and to find ways to expand the service to Federal Government agencies.

"These are good outcomes that will improve Canberra's transport planning and help to create a more sustainable city," Ms Bresnan concluded.

Until there is movement from Simon Corbell, the announcement by Amanda Bresnan means nothing.

I do not agree with allowing cars to duck and dive into a priority bus lane. Generally most bus drivers who use these lanes enter it at the start and then stay in it at full speed. Whereas some car drivers will pull into the lane ahead of a bus and drive slightly below the speed limit, which defeats the purpose of a priority lane.

But I concede encouraging car pooling is not an entirely bad idea. So as a compromise, I would suggest a T3 lane apply only during peaks and a bus lane only at all other times.

This is the only reason I support a T2 lane, as these cars now sit just below the speed limit in the lane next to the bus lane. Which is annoying as a motorists, but as a bus commuter I have seen some bus drivers be able to undertake cars sitting in the T2 lane.

But if the Greens really cared about the T2 lane, surely they prefer a T4 lane or even for the "Park 3 for Free" to be brought back to Woden.

ADELAIDE AVENUE T2 TRANSIT LANE TO BE REINSTATED

The T2 transit lane on Adelaide Avenue between Melrose Drive and State Circle will be reinstated from Monday 21 November, Director, Roads ACT, Tony Gill has announced.

"The ACT Government will reinstate the T2 transit lane while an assessment is undertaken on whether it should be a T2, T3, T4 or a bus-only lane," Mr Gill said.

"This assessment will be undertaken over the next three months.

"I urge motorists to use the transit lane appropriately and not weave in and out of traffic, which has raised safety concerns from bus drivers," Mr Gill said.

Mr Gill said that signage and road markings advertising the reinstatement of the T2 transit lane will be erected tomorrow.

Hmmm, when is a bus lane not a bus lane?  It's all fine if other road users 'keep up with the program', but something tells me they won't.  Just look at the way some behave on 'Form One Lane'.  They just can't STAND the idea of being behind the bus for a little while.

As far as Adelaide Ave goes. I can just see myself tramping along on an intertown only to have some douche cut in front causing a slow down or a harsh pull up giving the pax an unecessary jolt.

I like the idea of keeping it bus only in the peaks but I suppose that defeats car pooling.
