* Route 86 was created following [[Route 050 (1999)]] being split in two, with Route 86 taking on the City to Woden leg.
* From January 2000, the route was amended to operate between Woden and Fyshwick, and running on weekdays only. Services between Fyshwick and the City were covered by [[Route 080 (1999)]].
* The route was modified to operate as a loop from Woden in December 2006, and to service the Canberra Eye Hospital in Symonston.
