Media Release – Shane Rattenbury MLA

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury, today announced the completion of a new bike and ride facility on Kippax Place at the Kippax Centre.

“Bike and ride facilities provide an easy and convenient way for Canberrans to get around our nation’s capital and help to reduce congestion on our road network. This new facility will ensure residents in Kippax and the surrounding area have the opportunity to combine bike and bus travel in the ACT, which is now even better with the start of Network 14” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Network 14 services leaving from or near the new bike and ride include the Blue Rapid routes 343 and 313, which combine to depart Kippax every 15 minutes and travel to Belconnen, City, Woden and Tuggeranong, regular weekday routes 16,17 and 44 departing throughout the day to Belconnen and Xpresso Peak hour routes 717, 744 and 743.

“Canberra has a great range of facilities to encourage Canberrans to use their bike to get around the city and suburbs including bike lockers, bike cages, bike rails and bike racks on buses. There are free bike parking facilities at over 20 locations across the ACT and over 80 percent of ACTION’s bus fleet is fitted with bike racks.

“There are so many opportunities to bike and ride, with many Canberrans using the facilities on weekdays to ride part of the way to work and catch the bus for the rest of their journey and on weekends to catch the bus into town centres and then ride between different attractions and sites.

“Not only is combining bike use with bus travel a money saver, it also allows people to find their 30 minutes of physical activity for the day. The ACT Government is committed to supporting a healthy and active community and we want to make it easier for Canberrans to make healthy lifestyle  choices.

“I encourage everyone to make use of the bike and ride facilities across Canberra, as doing so will also help make Canberra a more sustainable and active city.

“In addition to providing bike and ride facilities, the ACT Government also provides park and ride facilities. There are 19 park and ride facilities across Canberra, which further demonstrates the government’s commitment to sustainable transport options.”
