Media Release: Transport Canberra and City Services, 22 December 2016
New MyWay fares for public transport in Canberra will come into effect on Saturday 14 January 2017, coinciding with the start of the 12 month trial of free off peak travel for seniors and concession card holders (excludes student and tertiary card holders).
“MyWay fares will increase by a maximum of 2.7% and cash fares increasing between 10 and 20 cents depending on the ticket type,” said Ian McGlinn, Director, Public Transport Operations.
“A trip from Gungahlin to the City during peak times is only $3.06 when paying with MyWay. A similar journey, over 12 kilometres, would cost as much as $4.20 in other jurisdictions.”
“Passengers are reminded of the significant savings that can be made when traveling with a MyWay card. Discounts apply for card holders as well as monthly and daily fare caps. Adults travelling during peak times receive a discount of 36% when using MyWay compared to paying for a single cash fare. Further discounts are also available when passengers choose to top up their MyWay card using autoload or B-Pay.
“A reminder that from 14 January 2017, eligible senior and concession card holders will also receive free bus travel during off peak periods.
“Travel will be free on weekdays between 9 am and 4.30 pm, after 6 pm and all day Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. To be eligible for the free travel, passengers will be required to use their MyWay card and tap on and off the bus as usual.
“Transport Canberra is committed to providing easy and accessible public transport for all Canberrans with this trial, one of many initiatives being implementing to ensure we build a better public transport network for our future.”
