Media Release: Katy Gallagher MLA

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Katy Gallagher, has declared the ACT Government’s Nightrider bus service a resounding success with 2,608 people utilising the service throughout December 2011.

“The ACT Government’s Nightrider service proved a very popular and affordable option for people to get home safely after a night out during the festive season,” the Chief Minister said.

“A total of 2,608 people used the buses across the four weekends they operated. This includes 548 people on the opening weekend, 776 people on the second weekend, 145 on Friday 23 December service and 1,139 on the final weekend, which included New Year’s Eve.

“Compared to the 979 people who used the service in the same period the previous year, this is a significant increase and a great result,” the Chief Minister said.

This year the ACT Government focused the Nightrider service on the traditionally busy weekends in December which enabled the marketing campaign to be more targeted.

The fare was also reduced to five dollars which presented a very attractive transport option for people to get home.

The Nightrider routes serviced suburbs in Belconnen, Gungahlin, Inner-North, Inner-South, Woden and Tuggeranong, dropping passengers at the bus stop nearest to their home. The service was provided on 9-10 December, 16-17 December, 23 December and 30-31 December 2011.

“I’d like to thank Civic businesses and industry groups for getting behind Nightrider as a convenient and responsible way for patrons to travel home after a night out,” the Chief Minister said.

“The ACT Government will now evaluate the Nightrider service and see if any modifications are needed as we plan services again next summer,” the Chief Minister concluded.
