2021 was a quiet year for Public Transport in the ACT; let’s have a look back to see what occurred –

QCity / CDC operated Light Rail replacement shuttles in January

January

  • 10-23 – Partial Light Rail shut down for Mitchell stop construction: buses replace Light Rail between Gungahlin and Dickson
  • 25 – Bus 490, Yutong electric bus ends service
  • Fleet count 31 January: 463 buses

February

  • Buses withdrawn: 911, 926

March

  • 13-14 – Weekend Light Rail shutdown between Gungahlin and Dickson

April

  • QCity Transit commences real time bus tracking
  • “Pre-tender consultation” released for MyWay ticketing and RTPIS replacement
Tram 001

May

  • Tram 001 in new AOA for Check in CBR
  • Former buses 110 & 113 transported to Perth for preservation

June

  • 3tender issued for lease of 34 buses to replace remaining Renault PR100.2 buses
  • Shuttle service commences between Airport Terminal and Covid-19 vaccination hub
  • 28 – Face masks become mandatory on buses, trams and at stops and stations
  • Buses withdrawn: 925, 927, 928

July

  • Construction of Woden Interchange replacement commences with work underway for new layover sites
  • 10 – Face mask usage changed from “mandatory” to “encouraged”
  • 15Check in CBR usage required for all bus and tram travel
  • 30 – Bus 307 suffers major engine failure and is withdrawn from service

August

  • Expressions of Interest sought for ticket/RTPIS system replacement
  • Contract for Tow Truck replacement awarded to Scania.
  • 12 – Covid-19 lockdown commenced – face masks once again mandatory on public transport
  • 18 – Bus 927 brought back into service to replace Bus 307
  • 25Reduced bus timetable commenced – timetable based on 2020 Christmas/New Year timetable

September

October

  • 6 – ACT Budget: confirmed lease of 34 buses and tender for 90 electric buses to be issued; new route to commence in 2022 servicing Whitlam
  • 15 – 30 year anniversary of Bus 929 – the first bus to reach 30 years continuous service
  • 25 – School services added to interim bus timetable

November

  • 1 – Light Rail timetable updated with increased peak services and earlier start on Sundays
  • Kenny Park & Ride carpark opened
  • Airport Vaccination hub shuttle ceased service
Bus 702 at the “Pack the Bus” launch

December

  • 6-17 – Bus 702 operates “Pack the Bus“, collecting gifts and food for Christmas
  • 20 – Holiday period timetable commenced – same as interim timetable from August but will continue until end of January
  • 26 – Bus 440 involved in collision on Ginninderra Drive, Bruce
  • End of year fleet count: 458 buses
