The Belconnen Interchange was located between Benjamin Way and Chandler Street in Belconnen and opened in January 1979. It closed on 25 May 2009 as part of the Belconnen Mall redevelopment.
The Interchange had always been a subject of debate in Canberra, with the most resounding criticism saying that was too isolated, and had a reputation for being unsafe at night.
The first Interchange in Belconnen was a temporary (at first intention) one located on Fullagar Crescent Higgins, and was opened on 2 July 1973. As a result of traffic congestion, the Interchange was moved off-street on 22 December 1975. Due to construction delays of the permanent Belconnen Interchange, the Higgins site was used for almost six years.
Facilities
Various facilities at the Interchange have closed over the years, and the last remaining facility was the Information Office, which was located at the end of the Benjamin Way overpass, adjacent to Platforms 15 and 16.
